Road News

This fall the deeded easements for both major ends of the Cove Rd./Orchard Rd. were presented to the City, which assures the continuation of summer and winter maintenance for those roads, much to the relief of the full-time residents I'm sure. The City has also accepted the Branch View Drive road to Sandy Beach as a Public Way, which will make the City responsible for certain maintenance work that hopefully will be satisfactory for all concerned parties. The appeal of the court decision concerning collection of road association dues is scheduled in Ellsworth Superior Court on June 5th. This decision could have a significant impact on other road associations that are having collection problems also. The BPA executive committee voted last fall to pay one half the court costs up to $500 to help out. The final outcome and final costs may be discussed at the annual meeting in July.

Dam News

The lawsuit brought by Bob Murray against Bangor Hydro was settled recently and this puts an end to any question of ownership of the Dam. The City of Ellsworth is now the proud owner and operator of the Branch Pond Dam and all that entails. Water Company Head, Larry Wilson has been very cooperative and responsive to our concerns and questions. He has also been cooperating with the State Fish and Game Dept. on water levels to aid the fish spawning.

Annual Meeting

The date for the annual meeting is July 25, Friday night at 7:00 pm. There will be a social hour starting at 6:00 pm. The meeting will be held at the City Hall auditorium as usual. The speaker will be Laura Wilson, an environmental engineer, on water quality issues and the new watershed management rules that will go into effect probably this fall. The COLA meeting will be held on July 12, and the Loon count will be done on July 19. We are hoping to have that updated information at the annual meeting.

Important!

Please answer the attached questionnaire promptly and return it as soon as possible. This updated survey is needed to give the BPA leadership and the City of Ellsworth input for future direction and hopefully give us some statistics to present at the annual meeting. We had a very poor return on the fall newsletter questionnaire. Please voice your opinion!

Executive Committee terms are up for Wilson's Way, Phillips Beach Rd. area, and Branch View Drive East. Also we have no representation from the Walls Farm Rd. area. Please contact Brett Johnston, Calvin Anderson, or Dick Hardy if you are interested in being involved on the executive committee from those areas. Some new blood and new ideas would be welcomed.

BPA opinion poll (check only one answer for each question)
1. Do you favor the restriction of vehicles with a gross weight of 1000 Ibs. or more from the Lake when the ice is in? (This would permit the use of snowmobiles and ATVs.)

YES-- NO-- NO OPINION--

2. Do you suffer significant property damage done by people trying to gain access to the Lake in the winter?

YES -- NO -- NO OPINION --

3. Do you favor the creation of an alternate public boat ramp or access point on the Lake do to the potential Hanson's Landings closing? (The most likely site would be the State owned Sandy Beach area.)

YES-- NO-- NO OPINION--

Letter From the Fish and Wildlife Office
(68 Water St., Machias, ME 04654)

December 24, 1996

Dear Branch Lake angler:
Enclosed is a sheet, which summarizes some of the work accomplished at Branch Lake in recent years. I thought you would be interested in our findings.

During recent ice fishing seasons, use has ranged from 1400 angler-days last winter to nearly 3600 angler-days in 1995. Of course, the unusually mild weather last year in January created very unsafe ice conditions, which was reflected in very low fishing pressure. Although we haven't worked up the use estimate for this past summer yet, it was nearly 2800 angler-days in 1995.

We made a good catch of salmon this fall in our trapnet, capturing a total of 49 salmon. Of these, only one was a wild fish. Age distribution of the 48 stocked salmon was as follows:

35 age II+'s, 10 age IIl+'s, and 3 age IV+'s. The age II+ salmon looked very good averaging 18.1" long and 2 Ib, 1 oz in weight. Their relative shape was very good as indicated by the 0.96 condition factor. These fish were stocked on April 28,1995, and, on average, grew 11.3" from that date until capture in late October. The 10 age III+ salmon we captured were also in very good shape averaging 19.5" long and 2 Ib, 9 oz in weight.

All together, 73% of our sample weighed in at 2-lb or more, and 12% weighed 3-lb or more. These were the best proportions of our last 3 trap netting years. The 5 biggest salmon were:
            20.9 in     3 lb, 14 oz
            20.8 in     3 Ib, 2 oz
            20.9 in     3 Ib, 1 oz
            20.4 in     3 Ib, 1 oz
            21.0 in     3 Ib

The outlook for the upcoming 1997 ice fishing and open water seasons is good for salmon. Fish measuring 18-19" and weighing from 2-2 1/4 Ib should be well represented in the catch. Further, it appears as if you'll have a fair opportunity to tangle with a legitimate 3-pounder. Your interest in the fisheries of Branch Lake is gratefully acknowledged.

Sincerely,
Ron Brokaw
Regional Fisher Biologist
